Ever since ObamaCare was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in the spring of 2010, we, the opponents of this monstrosity, have continued fighting it and have expressed willingness to commit civil disobedience should it be implemented by the administration. With the recent contraception mandate issued by the Health & Human Services Department, the possibility has come closer to becoming reality than ever before.
Proponents have attempted to turn the argument into one about women's health, claiming the contraceptive mandate helps all women, while ignoring the real issue of the mandate: the infringement of religious liberty. The
Roman Catholic Church, which runs a number of hospitals, colleges and
other facilities, has been targeted by the Obama administration with a mandate ordering them to go against their religious beliefs.
The very principle of separation of church and state always touted by
the Left is being violated here (and, of course, the Left has been silent about this infringement).
The Catholics, thank God, have been firm in their opposition, not only since the mandate was first issued, but also since the President's press conference where he announced religious organizations wouldn't have to pay for contraceptives (but still have to provide them). Other Christian leaders, as well as Jewish leaders, have been standing in unison with the Catholics; the President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (of which my church is a part of), Rev. Matthew Harrison, testified before Congress earlier this week and asked for Congress to get government “out of our consciences”:
The Catholic bishops, Rev. Harrison and the other religious leaders who've made their stand on this battleground are willing to disobey the mandate (even to the point of going to jail) in the defense of their (and our) religious freedom. What about us? Are we willing to make a stand with the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, with all who are willing to commit civil disobedience against an administration overstepping their bounds? What say you?
