To Former Senator Evan Bayh,

After twelve years in the Senate, you are now a private citizen, and I can't tell you how grateful to God I am for your departure.

Going through the prepared remarks for your farewell speech, I see you once again sound like such a moderate Democrat, such a reasonable statesman.  You always were a damn good actor, weren't you?  Always knew the right words to say to fool Hoosiers into thinking you weren't such a radical Democrat, didn't you?

There are a few passages in your speech that just makes me laugh, such as for starters, your gratitude to your “devoted staff”.  I'll bet they are devoted, devoted to keeping you away from those constituents of yours who had a beef with the votes you cast for things like the first stimulus bill under President Obama's watch or the massive overhaul of the health care system otherwise known as ObamaCare (don't worry, Mr. Bayh, we'll get to that and more later).

Then there's that wonderful passage where you express your gratitude “to the wonderful people of Indiana for whom I've been privileged to work almost my entire adult life”.  You follow that up with even more wonderful compliments to we, your constituents:

Hoosiers are hardworking, patriotic, devout and full of common sense.  We are Middle America and embrace middle-class values.  The more of Indiana we can have here in Washington, the better Washington will be.
How nice of you, Mr. Bayh; too bad middle class values from hardworking, patriotic and devout Hoosiers full of common sense were merely a tool of yours to advance your way up in the political arena.  In the twelve years you spent “representing” me, “representing” Hoosiers in the Senate, you didn't listen to Hoosiers like me.  Didn't matter how many times we wrote letters or sent e-mails or called your offices in D.C. and Indiana or personally visited your office in D.C.; all of our requests, all of our complaints fell on deaf ears.  The only thing we got back from you, Mr. Bayh, was mere lip service.  You said only what you thought we wanted to hear, hoping that would shut us up.

As for your voting record, I find it funny to hear you described as a moderate Democrat when one must consider the bills you voted for, such as the first Obama stimulus bill, for McCain-Feingold and later bringing back McCain-Feingold in the form of the DISCLOSE Act, for supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants, for supporting the so-called FDA food safety bill, and especially supporting ObamaCare.

And it's that part about you supporting ObamaCare that's really interesting.  Being someone who was perfectly willing to vote against your party for the sake of maintaining your image as a moderate Democrat, it surprised me to see you not only voted for ObamaCare (for invoking cloture and the final bill), but you were also a key player in ensuring all 60 Democrats at the time voted for it.

No wonder you decided not to run for a third term this past year.  Sure, I know you had other reasons to step down (as you said), but the truth has always been apparent: you knew you would've lost in 2010.  You knew we Hoosiers, with our middle class values and common sense, would've been so outraged at your actions, no lip service nor constant citing of your record would've saved you from defeat at the hands of Senator Dan Coats or anybody else seeking the Republican nomination.  The defeat of Brad Ellsworth in that race stands of proof.

So, anyway, thanks for nothing (except getting out), and while we both know that's wishful thinking on my part, because bad pennies like you always turn up, as the saying goes, I hope never to hear from you in the political arena again.  Bye-bye, Bayh, and good riddance to bad rubbish, as the saying goes.
