...there are quite a few items I wanted to pontificate on while there's still time, so here's goes:
1) Neil Abercrombie and the Birthers
The newly inaugurated Governor of Hawaii, Neil Abercrombie, has expressed intentions to put to rest for good the controversy over Barack Obama's birth certificate. For once, I applaud a progressive Democrat's actions. The matter of President Obama's natural birth should've been resolved during the 2008 elections. I hope the President's birth certificate will be released, so questions can finally be answered.
And, in case anyone is wondering, I'm neutral; until irrefutable proof arises to decide the issue one way or the other, I regard both sides as being full of cow manure and nothing else.
2) Having Scottish cake and eating it too?
You may not be familiar with the publication The Scotsman, but I came across an article where the leader of the Labour Party there, Iain Gray, criticized the First Minister, Alex Salmond of the Scottish National Party (SNP), for not moving forward with SNP's goal of independence from the United Kingdom.
Putting aside the fact the SNP hasn't succeeded in its goals, I find the matter a little funny because a regional leader in a British political party, which doesn't advocate independence for Scotland, is criticizing the leader of a regional political party which came about because of the desire for independence from the UK for not moving fast enough in securing independence from the UK. All's fair in love, war and politics, huh?

Becky Skillman for Governor? Not in 2012.
Now this one surprised me.
It was reported today that my Lt. Governor, Becky Skillman, will not be seeking a run for Governor of Indiana in 2012 due to a recently discovered health situation. There's no mention as to what the condition is, but it has been stated it will not affect her work as Lt. Governor.
Of the three people whose names have been brought up as possible candidates for Governor, I personally thought Lt. Gov. Skillman would run for the top job, but now with herself and Evan Bayh out of consideration, only Mike Pence remains on that list. Not much for the rumor mills to gin up, is there?
While it's still just speculation about what the Congressman will do in the next two years, one thing is also certain: with Lt. Gov. Skillman out, it'll be a free-for-all in the Republican primaries. As with both the upcoming U.S. Senate race and the race for President, the race for Governor looks to be interesting (to say the least).
As for Lt. Gov. Skillman, I hope she will recover from whatever her health condition is, and I thank her for her years in public service.

It's a wonderful reminder of remembering our troops during the Christmas season. God bless our troops, and Merry Christmas to them, their families and their friends.

Taimour the dead terrorist
So there's been news about a terrorist attack in Sweden yesterday. The bloggers at Libertarian Republican have been covering the latest from this attack, and it looks like this would-be terrorist, a guy named Taimour Abdulwahab, succeeded in injuring two people and killing himself.
I hope the two people injured will recover in every possible way, and I hope Lars Vilk continues to receive protection from every attempt of terrorism against him and his family, but I have to say it's interesting to see how another attempt at terrorism has proven not too successful for the insidious cause of jihad.
It's almost as if the Keystone Kops were in charge of these attempted acts of terrorism. One can only be ever so grateful these attempts are such duds. But after noticing this memorial page for the now dead terrorist, I'd say a better tribute would be this:
Now I'm starting to wonder if Taimour the dead terrorist realizes that there's no mention of the 72 virgins being necessarily women!

Evan Bayh for Governor? Not in 2012.
Almost a month ago, there was The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne talking about the possibility of Evan Bayh, my soon-to-be former U.S. Senator (thank God!), and Congressman Mike Pence facing off in the 2012 race for Governor here in Indiana. Now, it turns out The Indianapolis Star (courtesy of The Star Press) has reported the former Senator (and former two-term Governor) will not be seeking another term in the Governor's Mansion.
Bye-bye, Clash of the Titans.
With Bayh now out, that doesn't leave much for the rumor mills. The two remaining possibilities for the gubernatorial race are Lt. Governor Becky Skillman and Congressman Pence (both Republicans). I personally believe Lt. Gov. Skillman will make a run for the top job in Indiana, but I don't know enough about her to support her candidacy. As for Mike Pence, whether it's Pence for Governor or Pence for President, there's nothing but speculation on what he'll do in 2012.
As for Evan Bayh, I hope never to hear his name again in politics (wishful thinking, yes, but I can dream, can't I?). Much like a Democrat candidate for State Representative we had not too long ago, Evan Bayh is a disingenuous Democrat, always presenting himself as a moderate, but voting as a progressive (sprinkled with occasional votes to the contrary in order to keep up his false image). And, of course, even if he were an actual moderate, that would still be reason enough to never support him.
However, as I noted, we Hoosiers will be hearing about Evan Bayh again in the political arena; people like him don't stay away for long (just ask Jill Long Thompson!)

A step in the right direction
A piece of great news came this past Thursday came with the appointment of Ron Paul as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy.
Appointed by soon-to-be Speaker John Boehner as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Alabama Congressman Spencer Bacchus revealed his choices for the leadership positions of the committee, with the Congressman from Texas getting the much hoped for appointment for the Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommittee.
This appointment is a great step in the right direction. With Congressman Paul's new job, his jurisdiction will include monitoring the actions of the Federal Reserve, a leviathan of government the gentleman from Texas has been battling for some time. Furthermore, I cannot think of anyone more qualified to lead a subcommittee on our domestic monetary policy than Ron Paul. I take more stock in what he has to say about money than I ever would Ben Bernanke.
Congratulations to Ron Paul with his appointment.

Remembering the Survivors of Pearl Harbor
I came across this video from last year of a Pearl Harbor survivor, Ray Garland, speaking to KXLY (out of Spokane, Washington) about his experience as a Marine stationed on the USS Tennessee that morning of December 7th, 1941:
Just as we should never forget the 2,403 Americans killed at Pearl Harbor, may we never forget the survivors of that day who are still with us.

RIP Ron Santo
One of the great Cubs players of all time, Ron Santo, passed away last night at the age of 70. I have to admit, the third baseman and later radio broadcaster was before my time (my early memories consist of Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Andre Dawson and Shawon Dunston), but whenever I heard of the great men who wore the Cubs uniform, Ron Santo's name was among the two mentioned the most (the other belonging to Ernie Banks).
I wish I could write a worthy tribute, but Al Yellon at Bleed Cubbie Blue and Gene Wojciechowski at ESPN.com did a far better job. From what I've read of his life story, Ron Santo was a man who faced great obstacles (as a result of his battle with juvenile diabetes) and possessed even greater fortitude. As Mr. Wojciechowski wrote, “Santo was as much a part of the Cubs as the ivy, the brick outfield walls and the ancient scoreboard. He lived the Cubs. He died the Cubs.”
May he rest in peace.
