Remembering Mary Jo Kopechne

Today has been an unofficial day of remembrance with the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, who succumbed to brain cancer earlier this week. However, today should especially be a day of remembrance for a young woman who has been gone 40 years now, Mary Jo Kopechne.

Mary Jo was an only child of an insurance salesman and his wife. She was involved in the civil rights movement in the early 1960's, and later worked (tirelessly is the word used to describe her efforts) for Senator Robert F. Kennedy. She was very much involved in politics and was a devout Catholic. By all accounts, Mary Jo had a successful life ahead of her. Sadly, her life was cut short in July of 1969 on Chappaquiddick Island.

For the sake of his family, I am sorry to hear of Senator Kennedy's death and they have my condolences, but may the memory of Mary Jo Kopechne never be forgotten. R.I.P.

My latest review

I've posted a review of the just released film from writer/director Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds. If you want to read about the film, go ahead and check it out. Friendly warning, though, there are a couple of spoilers.

Targeted: Glenn Beck

What's happening to Glenn Beck now shouldn't be a surprise. A recent effort to get advertisers to boycott Mr. Beck's show has resulted in about three dozen advertisers boycotting (or so the boycotters say). The reason? Supposedly because Glenn Beck is some kind of loon and fear-monger who uses hate speech on his show. The effort has been spearheaded by a group called Color of Change, a group apparently employing Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals. Surprise, surprise.

In the seven months since his TV show started, Glenn Beck has spoken of the increased efforts to impose socialism on the country by the Obama administration and the Congress. He gets emotional, he acts silly, he acts crazy, he acts sarcastic, but he has never been a loon, he has never been a fear-monger, and he has never used hate (or inflammatory) speech. He also has never advocated violence and has not acted hysterically. The efforts by Color of Change has been simply a smear effort against Mr. Beck; a smear effort being played by Alinsky's rules.

Although not a supporter of boycotts by any side, Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs has also stated his own opinions of Mr. Beck, calling him a "racist kook" (because he supposedly promotes the John Birch Society, Ron Paul, End Times nonsense, creationism, and a host of other garbage ideas that are doing enormous damage to the conservative movement, a "punk" and a "jackass". He also still has hurt feelings over being "viciously" attacked by Mr. Beck once.

The idea that Glenn Beck is a racist, a jackass and a punk are some of the most absurd things I've ever read or heard in my life. I seriously have doubts that willing idiots like Mr. Johnson and others have really watched the TV show. And as for Mr. Johnson talking about what or what doesn't hurt the conservative movement, I find that funny (since he considers himself an independent), as if he knows what's better for conservatives. I'd sooner listen to Rahm Emanuel's advice for conservatives than I would Charles Johnson's.

Bottom line, Glenn Beck has done good for America and he continues to do so. Watch his TV show, listen to his radio program. Also, check out the website Defend Glenn, which has information on the truth of the pulling of ads from Mr. Beck's TV show.

Stand for the unborn

That's what the video below is about, courtesy of Stop The Abortion Mandate.

Health care reform I'd support

The main reason, if I'm not mistaken, for why supporters of ObamaCare are eager to see it passed is because the current health care system needs to be "reformed", and it needs to be "reformed" right now.

Well, if it needs to be reformed now, I can think of a couple things I'd be willing to support, and none of them involve government involvement.

Sarah Palin, in her latest Facebook note, writes of a measure that could save everybody a lot of money on health care costs: tort reform. Putting a stop to frivolous lawsuits against the medical community would save about $200 billion a year, as Governor Palin writes, based on the research she references.

The very reason the pro-gun community supported the stopping of frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers was due to the high legal costs of addressing the lawsuits. The support of tort reform in addressing the genuine need to reform health care is an effort I'd readily support.

Another idea brought up is the removal of the ban on purchasing insurance policies out of state, which would allow consumers a bigger palate to choose from, and greater odds of getting better, more suitable insurance. Needless to say, it's another idea that sounds good to me. And of course, any effort that would decrease government control over health care would be readily supported by me.

That's pretty much where I stand on solutions for genuine health care reform; any solution that reduces government control of and the cost of health care for everybody I'd be willing to support.

Hilarious ObamaCare posters

cbullitt at Soylent Green has some great ObamaCare posters. If ObamaCare is passed through the houses of Congress, don't be surprised when they ring true, but for the time being, enjoy the hilarity of them. Oh, and by the way, there's a nice surprise at the end (little background info here). Enjoy!

Grassroots News Minute (August 14th)

The tardiness of the latest Grassroots News Minute video was not from my end this time. At the end of the video, there's an ad featuring Chuck Norris (well worth watching the video, wouldn't you say?). There's also this video below on the truth about gun trafficking in Mexico:

A very telling video, indeed. Please watch this video; it's that important.

Now Isn't that interesting, chapter 25

The year's almost two-thirds over, so it should be no surprise that things are gearing up for the 2010 elections. Here in NE Indiana, the biggest elections we're going to see are for the U.S. Senate (Evan Bayh's seat) and for Congress (around here, Mark Souder's seat).

But it's in the Congressional race that things have become a bit interesting. Dr. Tom Hayhurst, a former Fort Wayne city councilman and Democrat nominee for Congressman Souder's seat in 2006, is throwing his hat in the ring once again opposite Congressman Souder. Because Dr. Hayhurst came closest to defeating Congressman Souder nearly three years ago, this potential rematch for 2010 has the makings of a tough race.

What makes this very interesting, however, is how Dr. Hayhurst figures he can do better this time around against Mark Souder. Scott Fluhr, writing at Hoosier Access, notes that:
If people in the 3rd District didn’t vote out Souder in 2006, when the sentiment was to vote out Republicans to put a check on George W. Bush, they’re not likely to vote Souder out in 2010, when the sentiment will likely be to send more Republicans to Washington to put a check on Barack Obama.
An extra note is that Dr. Hayhurst also supports "health care reform" (a.k.a. ObamaCare); the way sentiment about ObamaCare is in this part of Indiana, as is just about everywhere else in America, I'd say the odds are stacked more so against Dr. Hayhurst in 2010.

Hands Off My Health Care in Fort Wayne

Today marked the kickoff of the Hands Off My Health Care bus tour being held in Indiana. The rally was held in Fort Wayne this morning at 9 a.m., despite very steady rain coming down in the area. Fortunately, by the time the rally began, the rain had stopped (a nice respite as there has been bouts of steady rainfall all day today).

Americans For Prosperity, through their project Patients First, is behind the bus tour, and they passed around some homemade signs and had petitions available for people to sign, although at least one brought a sign of her own:

Among the speakers there included Congressman Mark Souder:

A man named Mark Hatfield spoke, giving us information about what the private health insurance industry really makes:

Also a Irishwoman, now a U.S. citizen, named Tara (I'm afraid I forgot her last name) spoke about the waiting time for people to see a doctor, let alone get treatment in Europe:

I also have a video featuring part of her remarks. I'm sorry I didn't get the whole of her remarks on this video; they were that good. I'm proud to call her a fellow American:

The crowd was quite sizable; I figured up to 100 people opposed to ObamaCare showed up, but the local media put the number either at over 100 or about 200:

Unsurprisingly, a counter-protest appeared as well, but the number was much smaller. I estimated up to 20 of them showed up, although the local news put the number to 25. Angry White Boy, which has better pictures of the rally, also has info on the person who organized the counter-protest:
Visiting the rally was State Senator Marlin Stutzman (below on the left), who is also running for the U.S. Senate against Evan Bayh next year. I signed up to help his campaign, so you can consider me an official supporter of Marlin Stutzman:

Before and after the rally, there was some entertainment, and the songs chosen for the rally were exceptional (Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly, God Bless The U.S.A., My Country 'Tis Of Thee and our beloved National Anthem):

It was a great gathering, with no hostility that I could see; in encounters I saw between protestors and counter-protestors, everything was cordial. The bus tour continues in several other cities throughout Indiana tomorrow and Wednesday. There's plenty of stuff going on within the next few weeks. This movement, for a freer country, has a lot more to do; still has a very good fight to wage.

A possible martyr

For a young girl who ran away from Ohio to Florida, that's what she could become if returned to her parents in Ohio: a martyr for the Christian faith. The young girl, Rifqa Bary, converted to Christianity from Islam, and according to her, when her father found out of the conversion, he threatened her with death or to be sent back to Sri Lanka and put in an asylum.

But this courageous girl refused to turn her back on her faith, and ultimately had to run away to Orlando, Florida and find safe haven with a pastor and his wife. Her parents want her back, but Rifqa doesn't want to go back, and now it's being decided in court.

Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs once again has been at the forefront, covering the story of Rifqa's travel to Florida and the efforts of her father and Islamic organizations to try and say she has been "brainwashed by a cult".

The courts in Florida have two decisions to take: either rule in favor of Rifqa Bary staying in Florida (and thus saving her life) or ruling in favor Rifqa returning to her parents in Ohio (and condemn her to death). It's either ensuring she can live to practice being a Christian without the shadow of death hanging over her or allowing another honor killing to take place here in America (or maybe in Sri Lanka).

Rifqa Bary is an amazing young girl for having the courage to stand up and proclaim Christ as her Savior, and considering how devout Islamists regard apostasy, her act of courage speaks many volumes. I know when the time comes (hopefully later than sooner), she will be with Christ and all the faithful before her in Paradise. My prayers are with you, Rifqa.

Ohhhhh Brother No. 19: A report of lousy sources

It boils down to a bunch of sources from newspapers, TV news and the Southern Poverty Law Center. The infamous report issued by the Department of Homeland Security about the rising threat of right-wing extremism has been denounced (and rightly so) as merely a hit piece on the Right (a.k.a. President Barack Obama's opposition), but a recent discovery of the sources used for the report show it to be the shoddy piece of tripe it really is.

Gabriel Malor at Ace of Spades has a good post about the revelation of the sources:
The Department of Homeland Security had no particular groups or individuals under investigation and used no collected data on "right-wing extremists" threatening national security to create the report. Rather, they just read news articles from the main stream media like MSNBC and CNN (and sometimes not-so-mainstream media like the "Vernon County Broadcaster"). However, by far the most frequent source for the report was articles and blog posts from the Southern Poverty Law Center, according to a FOIA response obtained by Americans for Limited Government.
That's pretty much it, and that's all it was needed for the Left (and at least one willing idiot) to do some fear-mongering about the rise of so-called right-wing extremists. But there was one particular part of the DHS report that drew the biggest ire; the claim that returning veterans were most likely to be recruited into right-wing extremist causes. That claim, too, has also been debunked, as Mr. Malor writes:

The reports and blog posts listed in the release on extremists in the military come from the SPLC which found that members of white supremacy groups and other extremist groups were attempting to join the military to get weapons training. In other words, these sources are about people who are extremists first and then joined the military--not the conclusion of DHS that veterans are prone to transforming into "terrorists" after service.

What can I say? Well, what can I say, that is, but Ohhhhh brother! (By the way, thanks to Blackfive for writing about this also, and providing links to Gabriel Malor's post at Ace of Spades.)

Help Project 2,996

Three years ago, on the fifth anniversary of 9/11, an effort was made to pay tribute to all the victims of 9/11 (and also of the first WTC attack in 1993). Known as Project 2,996, the effort is now being attempted again. However, fewer than 400 tributes have been assigned, and with 9/11 being roughly a month away, the word needs to be spread.

Even if you don't have a blog of your own, you can still post a tribute at a website for those who don't have a blog. Just go to the Project 2,996 website, sign up to participate in writing a tribute, and help keep the memories of those men and women murdered on 9/11 alive.

About new cars with greater gas mileage

One of the big beefs brought up with the new models of cars in recent years has been about gas mileage, as to whether the cars have good mileage or not. One of the reasons, in fact, SUV's were greatly criticized was due to the low mileage they give. The price of gas in America has fluctuated a lot in the last few years, so concern about gas mileage understandably grew.

Now, whenever new cars are designed and introduced to the public, efforts are made to insure the new cars have better gas mileage; they make sure to mention the better gas mileage in their commercials. But I have a question to those who tout the better gas mileage in the new cars:

How many gallons of gas can the tanks in those new cars hold?

Is the size of the tanks any different from older cars with not-as-good gas mileage? Are they larger or smaller? Can they hold 10 gallons, or 15 or 20? Has anybody asked these questions?

I Am Kenneth Gladney

Town hall meetings held by members of Congress have become heated with members of the labor union SEIU trying to keep ordinary Americans opposed to ObamaCare from voicing their displeasure at these town hall meetings, and it's getting violent.

Matt Wolking at Wolking's World (and also at Facebook) has this example of violent oppression being practiced by SEIU:

You may have heard about the black conservative, Kenneth Gladney, who was passing out “Don’t Tread on Me” flags outside of a town hall meeting in St. Louis. Kenneth was attacked by union members and called a “nigger” for his opposition to Obama’s push for a government takeover of health care. He is now in a wheelchair, albeit temporarily (I assume).

I’m standing up for Kenneth because he can’t at the moment. The likes of MSNBC and those in the government protection agencies formally known as the free press aren’t reporting his story. If he had been an Obama supporter, we all know he’d be more famous than Rodney King right now.

Mr. Wolking has more on what we can do to show solidarity with Mr. Gladney, as well as a link to a must-read article by Andrew Breitbart in The Washington Times. There's also links to videos at Mr. Wolking's blog post, including one featuring another act of union thuggery.

Ordinary Americans like Kenneth Gladney, so-called "angry mobsters", have the right to voice their disapproval at town hall meetings and not get beaten up by thugs behaving like Nazi stormtroopers. I'm an ordinary American, not a GOP-paid operative, and I am opposed to ObamaCare, just like Mr. Gladney. I am not an "angry mobster", and I do not drown out opposing viewpoints (or oppress them through violence). As Matt Wolking says it best, "We are real Americans." To add on it, we are Kenneth Gladney. I am Kenneth Gladney.

Alan Keyes on True Conviction

If anything, conservatives, libertarians and most (if not all) Republicans are united in opposition to the health care agenda President Obama and the Democrats are trying to ram down everybody's throats. But an interesting question has been brought up: would conservative and Republican leaders still be in opposition to ObamaCare if it were supported by a majority of the American people? Would they still stick to their convictions?

Alan Keyes, in his latest column appearing at World Net Daily, articulates on the matter of conservatives and convictions, and notes as an example how some conservatives and Republicans have not supported the rising discontent over the President's birth certificate.

Considering some conservatives and Republicans have gone to the point of joining in the ridiculing of the birthers and neutrals right along with the Left (and Little Green Footballs), if the majority of the nation believed ObamaCare was a good idea, would those same individuals also join in the ridiculing of ObamaCare opponents? The matter is over true conviction in the face of populism; how many conservative and Republican leaders live by them, and how many are willing to sacrifice those convictions for the sake of going with the flow? I certainly hope the number is very small.

The fact Republican leaders didn't stick to their true convictions stands alone as the main reason there are fewer GOP seats in either house of Congress, and that a Democrat, not a Republican, is in the White House today. Read the whole of Dr. Keyes's column.

My (belated) latest review

Not too long ago, I posted a review at The Normal Critic of a well made gangster film from 1971, Get Carter, starring Michael Caine. I forgot about a posting a mention of it (sorry about that), but by all means, please go ahead and take a look. And in case anyone's wondering, yes, the 2000 picture of the same title with Sylvester Stallone is a remake of the 1971 film.

Hilarious commercials: Super Bowl XXXVIII

Every Super Bowl has a fair share of hilarious commercials, but Super Bowl XXXVIII's commercials were overshadowed by the famous (infamous, really) moment involving Janet Jackson getting naked by the end of her song (sort of). So, here's three that I get a real kick out of.

Cedric the Entertainer had a great run of Super Bowl ads for Bud Light, this one involving a "full treatment":

Being a big fan of The Simpsons, I was going to include this MasterCard ad featuring Homer Simpson, whether you thought it was funny or not:

This one for Budweiser is to me the funniest of the Super Bowl ads that year, and if you watch, I think you'll know why:

A victory for Honduras

The U.S. government has apparently decided to drop their overt support for the deposed would-be dictator Manuel Zelaya, as well as refuse to impose economic sanctions on Honduras over the matter of Zelaya's deposal. This is good news; very good news, indeed.

With Honduras being 80% dependent on the U.S. for trade, according to an editorial in Investor's Business Daily, the sanctions would've done a number on the country to say the least. However, simply dropping the overt support for Zelaya's reinstatement isn't much at all.

The government is officially still unhappy with the deposal, and is in support of the mediation efforts being conducted by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias. Of course, the Honduran government has no objections to negotiations; the only thing they oppose unequivocally is Zelaya's reinstatement.

The facts still remain: 1) the deposal of Zelaya was not a coup of any kind 2) the vast majority of Hondurans support the deposal and the interim administration of President Roberto Micheletti. Honduras is in the right on this matter, and what my country's government should be doing is expressing solidarity with the Hondurans. Dropping overt support for Zelaya and not issuing economic sanctions are two steps in the right direction, but more needs to be done.

Playing by Alinsky's rules: Ridiculing Birthers

The most frustrating thing about the matter of Barack Obama's birth certificate is that while debate amongst the Right continues, the Left (and Little Green Footballs) continues to play by Saul Alinsky's rulebook, notably rule no. 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counteract ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage."

Anybody who even expresses mere doubts is subjected to ridicule on this issue, anybody who fears the possible subverting of the Constitution and wants the simple satisfaction of seeing irrefutable proof. And the result of this ridicule for the Left is simple: a divided opposition.

With what is on the agenda of the Left today (socialized health care, stricter environmental regulation, increased government taxation & spending, the falsely titled Employee Free Choice Act & Freedom of Choice Act, maintained Congressional majorities in 2010 and President Obama's re-election in 2012), is it such a surprise they'd be focused on ridiculing the Right over the birth certificate in order to distract? To divide and conquer?

Unfortunately, those on the Right who don't agree with the birthers have not helped themselves, in my opinion. They believe in order for the rift to heal, the birthers simply have to drop the quest to see the birth certificate. That will not work; there are still questions, doubts and inconsistencies in regards to the President's birth certificate, and again, we're talking about the possible subversion of the Constitution. That is something that should always be taken seriously.

In a comment I wrote at LGF 2.0, I said this:
what we on the Right should do is not focus on the divide between us over the birth certificate, and rather on the Left, on their tactics in using the birth certificate issue as a diversion from all the other grievances being committed by the Obama administration, and calling them on it.
This is what we on the Right should be doing: stop mocking the birthers, accept that they have an opinion not universally agreed upon by all, stop mocking the neutrals, accept that they (myself included) don't know for sure about either side, and above all, turn the focus on the Left, call them on their actions, continue to fight against the Left's efforts and don't let them divide us.

Unsurprising breaking news

Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be sworn in as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court after having been confirmed by a vote of 68-31, with only Ted Kennedy being absent (health reasons). As expected, my Republican Senator, Richard Lugar, was one of nine Republicans to vote for confirmation, and since that means 58 Democrats (including a not fully recovered Robert Byrd) & 1 Independent voted for confirmation, that means my other Senator, Democrat Evan Bayh, voted for confirmation as well.

As you might have guessed, this comes as no great surprise. Even if Senator Byrd had not showed up to vote and was absent as Ted Kennedy was today, that's still 57 votes from the Senate Democrats for Justice-to-be Sotomayor; more than enough needed to get by; more than enough to make history once again.

There's still hope Sonia Sotomayor will do what a Supreme Court Justice is supposed to do (uphold the Constitution), but I don't believe it. Be prepared for more Sonia Sotomayors to be nominated by Barack Obama.

RIP John Hughes

John Hughes, one of the great filmmakers of the 80's & 90's, died of a heart attack earlier today, at the age of 59.

It's hard to imagine that there isn't a person out there that hasn't even seen one of his films, let alone become a fan of one of them. The first three Vacation films, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Plains, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, the first two Home Alone films, Dennis The Menace, the live-action version of 101 Dalmatians; that is some list of great and funny films.

Considering many of the comedies of today are not as funny as their recent predecessors, it serves as additional testimony to how talented a writer, producer and director John Hughes was. His family and friends have my condolences. Rest in peace, Mr. Hughes, and thanks for everything.

Sotomayor: Racial politics at work

If anybody on the political Right thinks confirming Judge Sonia Sotomayor wouldn't be a bad idea, I'd say take a look at this column.

Tom Tancredo wrote the column, which appeared in several online publications (including Townhall), and it's focused on Judge Sotomayor's connection with the organziation La Raza, which means The Race in English:
Sotomayor was a member of La Raza and her comments about "Wise Latinas" being superior to white men appeared in the La Raza Law Journal. The National Council of La Raza bills itself as "the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organizationin the United States" who works through "its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations."
When considering those infamous comments, it makes better sense than the other explanations made in Judge Sotomayor's defense. La Raza's motto is all the more revealing of the racial politics at work here: "For the Race everything, outside the Race nothing". Mr. Tancredo further writes in the column of the double standard that exists amongst the Democrats in Washington:
If membership in the Federalist Society is a problem for the Democrats, imagine how they would react if Samuel Alito or John Roberts belonged to a group called "The National Council of the White Race" who honored a man who once said "We have got to eliminate Latinos, and what I mean by that is that if the worse comes to the worst, we have got to kill him," as "white man of the year." They wouldn't pass the bar, much less become Supreme Court justices. But when a Hispanic or Black holds these views, we need to celebrate him for his diversity.
If Judge Sotomayor's past rulings and comments, as well as her confirmation testimony, hasn't convinced you of the ominous potential of Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor, this column about her La Raza connections should. To know Senate Republicans (including my own Senator Richard Lugar) are flocking to support her confirmation makes this much worse. Read the entire column (yes, it's that important).

Playing by Alinsky's rules

It's well known about the many bogus ethics complaints filed against Sarah Palin during her tenure as Governor of Alaska, but recent revelations have shown that the people behind these complaints are connected with the Democrats, and they're not done with their campaign.

Fellow Blogger for Sarah Palin Josh Painter has three posts at his blog Texas for Sarah Palin on these individuals, their connections and their latest efforts.

In one post, the same tactics used in the form of bogus ethics complaints against Sarah Palin are now being used in Minnesota against Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann. In another post, even though Mrs. Palin is no longer Governor, the same cabal of operatives behind the complaints are now spreading lies and smears about her and her family. And in the third post, the operatives have been trying to suppress a video exposing the connections between themselves and the Democrats. Fortunately, the video is still available and embedded just below:

In case the embed doesn't work, here's a link to the video. The motivation behind these egregious efforts lies in what Josh Painter wrote in one of his three aforementioned posts:
The Democrats are ignoring the old warhorses on the right and aiming their Stalinist tactics right at the GOP's most promising young stars -- those who have been touted in recent years as being "the future of the Republican Party." Obama's most ardent supporters are determined to see to it that the GOP has no future, except for the squishy sort of candidates who can be counted on to lose elections to their Democrat opponents. No one even remotely Reagan-like will be allowed to stand untainted by their vile smears.
And they will do anything, namely playing by Saul Alinsky's rules, to win. This is one very good reason why the good fight for Sarah Palin is important; it's for the future of the one organization that can fight for the values we hold dear; for the future of the Republican Party. Please take a look at all three posts and read them.

Welcome, The Knights of Palin
